Winton Cottage originally dates from the sixteenth century and has been extended in recent years. It is located within the village Conservation Area and features in the Conservation Area Appraisal. Past owners had carried out many repairs to the medieval framed construction leaving it sealed and causing more decay in the process.
The current owners tried unsuccessfully to keep the cottage in a good decorative state internally by carrying out ‘breathable’ repairs but the extend of previous damage defeated them and they decided to tile hang the first floor north facing elevation to avoid the risk of damaging the framework further by rebuilding.
We obtained Planning and Listed Building Consent for the repairs. New sole plates where inserted to replace rotting timbers and the brickwork was repainted in a breathable paint system, following removal of layers of old modern paint.
